中宮（ちゅうぐう）には皇后（こうごう）が住（す）んでいます。

皇后（こうごう）のことを中宮（ちゅうぐう）とも呼（よ）ぶことがあります。

平安（へいあん）中期（ちゅうき）以降（いこう）、皇后（こうごう）とほぼ同格（どうかく）の后（きさき）を中宮（ちゅうぐう）と言（い）います。

昔（むかし）の皇后（こうごう）の称号（しょうごう）を中宮（ちゅうぐう）と言（い）うと今日（きょう）の歴史（れきし）の授業（じゅぎょう）で学（まな）びました。

平安時代以降（へいあんじだいいこう）は皇后（こうごう）及（およ）び同資格（どうしかく）の天皇（てんのう）の高宮（たかみや）を中宮（ちゅうぐう）と呼（よ）んでいたらしい。

律令制（りつりょうせい）では太皇太后宮（たいこうたいごうきゅう）、皇太后（こうたいごう）、皇后（こうごう）の三宮（さんぐう）を中宮（ちゅうぐう）と言（い）っていたと聞（き）きました。

皇后（こうごう）が住（す）まわれている居所（きょしょ）を中宮（ちゅうぐう）といい、それが転（てん）じてそれは皇后（こうごう）の別称（べっしょう）ともなった。

平安京（へいあんきょう）の場合（ばあい）、中宮（ちゅうぐう）の外郭（がいかく）は東西（とうざい）約（やく）３４２（さんびゃくよんじゅうに）メートル、南北（なんぼく）約（やく）３０３（さんびゃくさん）メートル、内郭（ないかく）は約（やく）１７３（ひゃくななじゅうさん）メートル、南北（なんぼく）約（やく）２１８（にひゃくじゅうはち）メートルもあったとか。
