Tentang 次第です

When following a verb in one of its standard forms, 次第(しだい) 'directly following' will be used to express reasons or give explanations. In these cases, it will be followed by either of the auxiliary verbs だ, or です. However, です is far more common, due to this use of 次第(しだい) primarily appearing in polite speech.

In this particular use of 次第(しだい), it is similar to 'the eventuation is that (A)', meaning that something ultimately ended up as (A).

Fun Fact

In all of its nuances, 次第(しだい) just expresses a sequence of events or deciding factors, and what either will or has happened due to that. This link can be seen in other grammar patterns like 次第(しだい) 'as soon as' , and 次第(しだい)だ 'depending on', or 'so'.

  • 先生(せんせい)：「なんで遅(おく)れたんだ？」生徒(せいと)：「電車(でんしゃ)が遅延(ちえん)していて遅(おく)れてしまった次第(しだい)です。」

    Teacher: ‘Why are you late?’ Student: ‘The reason is that the train was delayed.’

  • 部下(ぶか)が上司(じょうし)に：「吹雪(ふぶき)の影響(えいきょう)で列車(れっしゃ)の運行(うんこう)ダイヤが乱(みだ)れており、出社(しゅっしゃ)が遅(おく)れた次第(しだい)です。」

    Subordinate to boss: 'I arrived late to the office because of the blizzard and the train schedule was disrupted.'

  • 陽子(ようこ)：「どうして日本語(にほんご)の勉強(べんきょう)をしているの？」マット：「日本(にほん)にいずれ住(す)みたいと思(おも)って勉強(べんきょう)を始(はじ)めた次第(しだい)だよ。」

    Yoko: ‘Why are you studying Japanese?’ Matt: ‘The reason that I started studying is that I would like to live in Japan at some point.’

  • 辞表(じひょう)を提出(ていしゅつ)する：「母国(ぼこく)にいる身内(みうち)が倒(たお)れたとの連絡(れんらく)が入(はい)ったため帰国(きこく)する事(こと)にした次第(しだい)です。」

    Submitting a letter of resignation: ‘Because of receiving news that someone close to me collapsed in my home country, that is the reason why I have decided to return home.’
