    À propos de のみ

    のみ is the formal equivalent of the adverbial particle だけ 'only'. Compared to だけ, のみ is more often seen in formal writing, on signs and manuals, and in customer service scenarios.

    のみ is most often seen used directly after nouns or verbs. As with other adverbial particles, it may be used in combination with case-marking particles like に, to form phrases like にのみ.

    Caution

    のみ cannot substitute for だけ in all cases. Specifically, in phrases where だけ represents a degree or extent (instead of a limit or restriction), のみ would sound unnatural in its place.

    Caution

    のみ can also be used with adjectives but it is much rarer than use with nouns and verbs. As use with な-Adjectives is not common, it could sound unnatural to some people. When used with な-Adjectives, である will directly follow the な-Adjective, then のみ is attached.

    Use with い-Adjectives is generally more acceptable, however it can sound archaic. のみ will directly follow い-Adjectives.

      Notice Board: 'Today, we are selling same-day tickets only .'

      • あの新入社員(しんにゅうしゃいん)は成績(せいせき)が良(よ)いのみで、責任感(せきにんかん)は１(いち)ミリもないんだ。

        That new employee only gets good results; they don't have a shred of responsibility.

        • 客(きゃく)：「ドリンクのみでもいいですか？」店員(てんいん)：「はい。アルコール以外(いがい)にも多数(たすう)ご用意(ようい)しております！」

          Customer: 'Is it okay if we only order drinks?' Staff: 'Yes. We have a wide variety available besides alcohol too!'

          • それは便利(べんり)であるのみで、必(かなら)ずしも安全(あんぜん)とは言(い)えない。

            It is only convenient, not necessarily safe.

            • モデルオーディションの面接官(めんせつかん)：「この子(こ)は見(み)た目(め)がいいのみ、性格(せいかく)は暗(くら)そうだな。」

              Model audition judge: 'This girl only has good looks; her personality seems gloomy.'
