「つつ」の情報
「つつ」は動詞のマス形の語幹に付く助詞で、(A) と (B) が同時に行われることを示します。主に「(A) しながら (B) する」という意味で使われます。
「つつ」は硬い文型で、話し言葉よりも書き言葉としてよく使われます。
注意点
「つつ」は (A) の動詞が、実際に体を動かすような動作よりも、頭や心の中での動き、すなわち進行中の状態を表すときに使われることが多いです。一方、「ながら」は物理的な動作にも状態にも使うことができます。
ただし、「つつ」の文における (B) の動詞は、物理的な動きを表す動詞でも、進行中の状態を表す動詞でも構いません。

Hi all, and apologies for the late reply! It seems that we missed the questions piling up on this one . As is noted on the grammar point explanation, although つつ is more commonly used about non-physical actions, it can and sometimes will be used about physical actions.
Although not a strict rule, one tendency for つつ (even when it comes to physical actions) is to be used in relation to things that take a significant amount of time, or proceed along in a steady state. In this case it makes it seem like the flying that the bird is doing is something that is occuring in an unchanging state (without sudden changes in speed or direction like in active/conscious flying).
