This, That, and the Other
In this Topic, we're going to learn three essential words for pointing things out. これ, それ, and あれ. They are similar to 'this' and ‘that' in English, but Japanese has a useful distinction that English doesn't. It has two different words for 'that'!
The one you choose depends on the object’s position relative to the listener and the speaker.

これ
Esto
これ suele corresponder en español al pronombre ‘esto/este/esta’. これ siempre se usa para destacar algo que está cerca del hablante (cercanía física) o que éste siente cercano (cercanía emocional).
それ
Eso
Así como これ corresponde en español al pronombre ‘esto/este/esta’, se puede considerar que それ corresponde al pronombre ‘eso/ese/esa’. それ se usa para destacar algo que está más cerca del oyente que del hablante (cercanía física) o algo que el oyente siente más cercano que el hablante (cercanía emocional).
En estas frases, se puede ver que それ destaca aquello que el hablante identifica como más cercano al oyente o que tiene que ver con el oyente.
それ también se usa para referirse a cosas que fueron mencionadas antes en la conversación. Puede ser algo que ha sido ya dicho en la misma frase o algo que otra persona ha dicho antes.
あれ
Aquello
Igual que これ y それ, あれ es un pronombre que puede corresponder a ‘aquello/aquel/aquella’. あれ se usa para destacar algo que está físicamente lejos tanto del oyente como del hablante (cercanía física).
¡Ojo!
Ten cuidado de no confundirte con la expresión homófona あれ, que significa ‘¡¿qué?!’ o ‘¡¿cómo?!’ o ‘¡¿eh?!’ y es de uso muy habitual en el lenguaje hablado. La diferencia suele quedar clara dentro del contexto de la oración y por la manera en que se dice. あれ en el sentido de ‘¡¿qué?!’ se dice con tono ascendente y suena a pregunta.

The こそあど System
These words belong to a family called こそあど words. The first sound of each word tells us about the four possible states things can exist in. Closeness to the speaker (こ), closeness to the listener (そ), distance from both (あ), or the unknown (ど).
