役(やく)に立(た)つto be helpful, to be useful

彼(かれ)はとても役(やく)に立(た)つ社員(しゃいん)だ。

He is a very helpful employee.

この機械(きかい)は全(まった)く役(やく)に立(た)ちません。

This machine is of no use to us.

将来(しょうらい)は人(ひと)の役(やく)に立(た)てるような大人(おとな)になろうと思(おも)っている。

In the future, I plan to become an adult who can be helpful to others.

そんな役(やく)に立(た)たない知識(ちしき)を持(も)っていてもあまり良(よ)い事(こと)は無(な)いと思(おも)うけど…。

I don't think it does much good to have such useless knowledge...
