Variante 付いて
について is a combination of the case marking particle に , the う-Verb 就( つ ) く 'to assume a position', and the conjunction particle て. It is most often translated as 'about (A)', or 'concerning (A)', with the literal translation being closer to 'taking the position of (A)', or 'assuming the topic of (A)'.
について may be used after nouns, or noun-phrases (phrases that use こと, の, etc).
について may also appear before の + noun. In this use, it means '(A) that is about (B)'.
Caution
It is rare to see について actually using the kanji 就( つ ) . について itself is regularly considered as a single compound word , rather than a combination of its parts.
にまつわる Surrounding, Related or relating to, Associated with, Connected to
Both introduce a topic, but the nuance is different. にまつわる means ‘associated with' and is used for things indirectly connected through stories, episodes, or background, as in この神社には狐にまつわる話が多い ('There are many stories associated with foxes at this shrine.'). について is a neutral topic marker meaning 'about' or 'regarding,' used simply to state what is being discussed, as in 日本の歴史について勉強している (‘I am studying about Japanese history.').
These two phrases appear similar but are used quite differently. について means 'about (A)' or 'concerning (A)' and indicates the topic of a speech, discussion, etc., e.g. ゲームについて話す ('Speak about games'), while に取って (often written in hiragana as にとって) means 'to/for (A)' or 'as far as (A) is concerned' and is typically used to express perspective or point of view, e.g. 私にとって大切な人 ('An important person to me').
において・における In, On, At, Regarding, In terms of
While they appear similar in form, these expressions have different nuance and meaning. について means 'concerning (A)' and often marks a topic of discussion, question, and so on, e.g. 日本文化について話す ('Talk about Japanese culture'), while において・における is a formal equivalent of で and often indicates the location or context something happens, e.g. 会議において発表する ('Announce at the meeting').
に関する・に関して Related to, About, Regarding
Both patterns mean 'about (A)' or 'concerning (A)' and show a relationship between (A) and the following phrase, but with some differences. について is neutral in formality and attaches to verb phrases, e.g. 歴史について学ぶ ('Learn about history'), while に関する・に関して is somewhat more formal and can modify verbs (in に関して form) or nouns directly, e.g. 歴史に関する本 ('A book about history'), which について cannot do.
にかかわる To relate to, To have to do with, Concerning, Depends on
Both patterns relate to a topic, but differ in meaning, tone, and grammatical usage. について means 'about (A)' or 'concerning (A)' and attaches to verb phrases, e.g. スポーツについて話す ('Talk about sports'), while にかかわる is more formal and attaches to nouns, typically describing a more serious or consequential relationship, such as one involving life, health, or major repercussions, e.g. 命にかかわる問題 ('A life-threatening issue').
に対して In contrast to, While, In regard to, Whereas
Both に対して and について express a relationship between (A) and (B), but differ in nuance and usage. について means 'about (A)' and marks the topic of a statement, e.g. 日本について学ぶ ('Learn about Japan'), while に対して means 'toward (A)' and expresses direction or stance, e.g. 親に対する気持ち ('Feelings toward parents') or 優しい人に対して ('Toward kind people').
にかけては When it comes to, Regarding, Concerning
Both について and にかけては can be translated as 'about' or 'regarding', but they differ in specificity and usage. について typically marks the topic of a discussion, question, or the like, e.g. 日本文化について話す ('Talk about Japanese culture'), while にかけては highlights someone's strength or expertise in a specific area, often with praise, e.g. 料理にかけては彼が一番 ('When it comes to cooking, he's the best').
につき Due to, On account of, Each or every
Though similar in that both use に with a form of the verb つく, these patterns differ in meaning and formality level. について means 'concerning (A)' and typically marks the topic of a discussion, question, or so forth, e.g. 日本文化について話す ('Talk about Japanese culture'), while につき is a formal way to express a reason or condition, often used in official announcements, e.g. 悪天候につき中止する ('Cancel due to bad weather').
