About の次に

(つぎ)に is a phrase that is used to express that something comes 'after' something else. It shows the relative order of things.

It is composed of the case-marking particle の, the noun (つぎ) 'next', and the case-marking particle に. A noun or noun phrase must always come before の, as it is a case-marking particle.

The most basic use of の(つぎ)に is to show literal sequence in time, saying what comes 'next'.

However, の(つぎ)に can also show a relative ranking or order. In this usage, it will mean 'second (only) to...' or 'ranked after...'. This ranking can express things like preference or importance, not just numbers and figures.

Caution

(つぎ)に is used for abstract orders, not physical location. For physical location, の(となり)に is normally used.
