About 次第に
次第に is an adverb that expresses that something is happening 'gradually' or 'bit by bit' over time. This phrase is made up of the noun 次第, 'course of events' or 'circumstances', and the particle に, which turns it into an adverbial phrase.
While the noun 次第 implies a sequence or order, when used as the adverb 次第に, the main focus shifts to how something progressively and gradually changes over time.
次第に can be used for both positive and negative changes.
だんだん and 次第に both mean the same thing however 次第に sounds slightly more formal and is more likely to be seen in formal written language than だんだん.
