About という理由で

という理由(りゆう) is a phrase that is used when giving reasons for (A). (A) may be a range of different things, from what happened, to what one's opinion is. Due to という quoting the previous statement as being the 'reason', という理由(りゆう) puts quite a bit of emphasis on the reason itself. Because of this, the expression is quite similar to 'being that' in English.
The case marking particle で will be used after 理由(りゆう) to show that 'with' or 'by means of' that reason, (B).
  • コストコは(やす)沢山(たくさん)()(もの)出来(でき)という理由(りゆう)人気(にんき)がある
At Costco, you can shop for many things at a cheap price. For that reason it is popular.
  • 大変(たいへん)という理由(りゆう)(かれ)仕事(しごと)()めた。
Being that his job was a hassle, he resigned.
Fun Fact
Almost all cases where という理由(りゆう) will be used may be replaced by というわけで. However, the reverse is not true.
  • (やす)くて美味(おい)しいという理由(りゆう)この(みせ)(まえ)はいつも行列(ぎょうれつ)できています
Being that this place is cheap and delicious, they always have a long line in front of the store.
  • 一人(ひとり)()くないという(わけ)()です一人(ひとり)()(あぶ)ないと()たいです
It is not so that I don't want to go alone. I am saying that it is dangerous to go alone.
  • という理由(りゆう)この企画(きかく)はキャンセルすることにします。 (Unnatural)
For that reason, we are going to cancel this plan.
  • というわけでこの企画(きかく)はキャンセルすることにします。 (Natural)
Well with that, we will decide on canceling this plan.
The reason that わけ may be used for 理由(りゆう), but 理由(りゆう) cannot always be used for わけ (especially at the beginning of sentences) is because わけ is another way of reading the kanji for 理由(りゆう). However, the more common kanji for (わけ) will never be read as りゆう.

  • メアリーさん仕事(しごと)(ちゅう)映画(えいが)()がちという理由(りゆう)(くび)になるかもしれない。

Mary might be fired on the grounds of her having the tendency to watch movies while at work.

  • 仕事(しごと)とても大変(たいへん)だった。そういう理由(りゆう)今日(きょう)ゆっくりしたい。

'On the other hand,' with the reason being that 'customers do not come during the winter,' most shops are closed.

という理由で can follow から and ので, usually when quoting.

  • (かれ)はともこさん自分(じぶん)(つま)(ころ)したという理由(りゆう)ともこさん(うった)えた。

To me the “Fun fact” contrasting 訳 and 理由 is borderline inintelligible:

The reason that わけ may be used for 理由, but 理由 cannot always be used for わけ (especially at the beginning of sentences) is because わけ is another way of reading the kanji for 理由. However, the more common kanji for 訳 will never be read as りゆう.

I have zero idea why the fact that 理由 is a secondary spelling of わけ helps understand the nuance between the two.

I already complained about that in the past but I find that bunpro always taking the stance that meaning “comes from kanji” or that kanji comes first and the reading choice is a post-hoc decision is frankly a bit absurd and in this particular instance really confusing IMO. The word わけ came first, the choice of spelling is only relevant for the written language (and わけ is very often spelled in kana anyway).

All that to say that I after re...

I agree with simias, the difference is not explained that well.

    という理由りゆうで、この企画きかくはキャンセルすることにします。 (Unnatural)

After reading through the explanation, the only thing that comes to mind is that it should be
そういう理由で since it is at the beginning of a sentence. If I rephrase it like that is it then natural to use りゆう? Or is わけ the only correct answer?

Maybe the Fun Fact is just pointing out that you can read the phrase という理由で as both わけ and りゆう but という訳で not as りゆう.
